Why shouldnt cold storage be built underground?

Some people think that the cold storage is built underground, and the insulation effect will be better than that of the ground under construction, because in the past, when the technology was backward, it was very common to use cellars as crop storage. From a professional point of view, it is not scientific to build a cold storage underground.

As a professional cold storage construction team, from the perspective of customer consideration, it is generally not recommended to build the cold storage underground, because the professional insulation materials selected are sufficient to meet the normal insulation effect.

The temperature of the normally designed cold storage insulation wall is basically the same as the outside temperature. There is no need to build the cold storage underground. Moreover, if it is built underground, the humidity will have a great impact on the cold storage. Pay attention to moisture and waterproofing. Excavation also requires a lot of money, which will incur more costs.

Where should the location of the cold storage be chosen?

Industry experts believe that cold storage projects should be built in places with convenient transportation and reliable sources of water and electricity, and good environmental sanitation conditions around the storage sites. Harmful gases, smog, dust and pollution sources from infectious hospitals should be avoided as far as possible from industrial and mining enterprises.

The cold storage of meat, fish and other processing plants should be arranged on the upwind side of the urban residential area with the smallest frequency of summer wind, near the place of production or in a place where goods are easily distributed. Cold storage engineering buildings generally consist of cold processing and cold storage buildings, cold processing auxiliary buildings, transportation facilities, management and living buildings, etc. Cold processing and refrigeration buildings are collectively referred to as “cold rooms”, including cooling rooms with a temperature of about 0℃, freezing rooms with a temperature of -23~-30℃, refrigerating rooms with a temperature of -12~-20℃, and a temperature of -4~ The ice storage room temperature of -10℃ is in the pre-cooling room (acid discharge room) of 0-4℃.

The plane layout of the cold storage should make the technological process reasonable, the route should be short, not cross, the high and low temperature zones should be clear, the area of the enclosure structure should be reduced as much as possible, the column network should be neatly distributed, and the convenience of expansion and maintenance should be taken into account. The plane is generally square, and the multi-layer cold storage is often built into a dumbbell type or a single type. The dumbbell style divides the high temperature storage and low temperature storage into two independent enclosure structures, which are connected by a tunnel in the middle, and the use effect is better. The single-unit type separates the floor and the ground with an insulating wall between the high and low temperature warehouses. The warehouse door is connected to the room temperature hall, and an air curtain is set on the warehouse door to prevent the cold air from overflowing in the warehouse. The walls, ceiling, and ground of the cold storage should be laid with materials with low thermal conductivity, such as asphalt, expanded perlite blocks, etc., as heat insulation layers. At present, moisture-proof extruded panels or polyurethane spraying are more commonly used, and polystyrene is also useful. However, the moisture resistance is not good to prevent the external heat flow from immersing into the warehouse and increase the heat load.

Finally, in order to prevent outdoor water vapor from penetrating into the insulation layer, it is necessary to lay materials with high permeability resistance on the high temperature side of the insulation layer, such as asphalt felt, as the gas barrier. At present, polymer moisture-proof materials are generally used.

To sum up, it is very unreasonable to select the construction site of the cold storage project underground. A reasonable location needs to be determined based on the characteristics of the use of the cold storage and after many aspects of investigation and research.
